Garage Door Jammed Halfway? Secure It First

A garage door stuck half open leaves your garage open to the street, so treat it as urgent. The door has either jammed on something mechanical or the opener has cut out mid-travel, and those two need very different answers. A few safe checks will tell you which one you have.

Safety first: A door stuck halfway leaves your home open to the street and it is being held up by whatever jammed it. Do not crawl under it, do not stack anything beneath it as a prop, and do not keep pressing the button hoping it will free itself, because that usually turns a repair into a replacement.

What causes it

These are the causes we find most often, in roughly the order we check them.

    Power interruption mid-cycle

    Perth's summer storms and winter squalls trip RCDs and drop supply for a second or two. If the opener loses power partway through a cycle, the door simply stops where it is. When power returns, some units will not move again until they have re-learned their position.

    What you can check

    Check the opener's courtesy light and status LED. If both are dark, make sure the ceiling power point is switched on and look at the switchboard for a tripped RCD or breaker. Plug a phone charger into the same point to confirm there is supply.

    What we do

    Where the fault is inside the opener, such as a blown board fuse, a failed transformer or a perished lead, we repair or replace it and re-learn the travel. If the fault is in the house wiring we say so and refer it to a licensed electrician rather than guess.

    Opener thermal cut-out

    Opener motors carry a thermal overload that shuts them down after repeated cycles or a long strain against a heavy door. It is protection, not a defect. The door stops where it is and nothing responds until the motor has cooled, which can take twenty to thirty minutes.

    What you can check

    Hold a hand near, not on, the opener housing. A motor that has tripped on heat is noticeably warm. Note whether the door had been cycled many times in a short period, which is common on removalist days and during a garage clean-out.

    What we do

    A single thermal trip is normal. A door that trips it regularly is telling you it is too heavy for the opener, so we measure the balance, correct the springs and rollers, and only then look at whether the opener itself has a failing winding or capacitor.

    Spring or cable failed mid-lift

    If a spring breaks or a cable lets go while the door is travelling, the door stops instantly and jams itself in the tracks, usually with a loud bang. It is now being held up by whatever is binding it, which is not a component designed to carry that load.

    What you can check

    From well clear of the opening, look at the springs above the door and at both cables. A gap in a spring coil, a slack cable, or a door sitting higher on one side confirms it. Do not reach in, do not touch the door, and keep everyone out of the opening.

    We support the door mechanically, release the remaining tension under control, fit new springs or cables in matched pairs, then re-track and re-square the door. We treat this as an emergency call-out because the door is being held up by damaged hardware.

    Roller out of the track at the curve

    The radius where the vertical track curves into the horizontal is where a worn roller is most likely to jump out. The door climbs to that point, one roller pops free, the door binds hard against the track lip, and everything stops halfway.

    What you can check

    Look at the curved section of both tracks. A roller sitting outside the channel, a track lip pushed open, or a door edge hard against the track at that point are all visible from inside. Do not run the opener again to test it.

    What we do

    We support and re-track the door, replace the roller and the hinge if its stem hole has elongated, and repair or replace the track section that has been spread. Then we cycle it several times under supervision to confirm the roller stays where it belongs.

    Latched fault code after an obstruction event

    Modern openers store fault codes, and some refuse to move until the code is cleared, particularly after repeated obstruction trips or a sensor fault detected mid-travel. The door sits where it stopped and the status LED flashes a pattern that identifies the fault.

    What you can check

    Count the flashes on the opener's status LED and note the pattern, then check the photo eyes at the bottom of the tracks are clean, aligned and lit. Wipe both lenses with a dry cloth and clear anything sitting in the beam path.

    What we do

    We read the code, deal with the underlying fault rather than just clearing it, then reset the board and re-learn the travel. Codes that keep coming back almost always trace to a mechanical problem the opener is correctly complaining about.

    Failing motor start capacitor

    AC openers use a capacitor to get the motor turning. As it degrades the motor starts weakly, manages the part of the travel where the door is easiest to move, then stalls in the heavier section. It often hums rather than running cleanly.

    What you can check

    Listen for a hum, or a slow laboured start instead of the usual crisp run. Note whether the door manages more travel first thing in the morning than later in the day, because a tired capacitor behaves differently with temperature.

    What we do

    We test the capacitor under load and fit a correctly rated replacement, which is an inexpensive part on most units. We also check the motor windings and the run current, because a capacitor that failed early is often taking the blame for a motor on its way out.

When to stop and phone someone

Checking the power, the status LED and the photo eyes is safe and often gets the door moving again. If there was a bang, if the door sits crooked, or if it will not budge at all, stop there and secure what you can.
