Door Jumped the Track? Stop Using the Opener

Why a door comes off its track

Four causes cover nearly every off-track door we attend. A snapped lift cable lets one side drop and the rollers pull out. A vehicle or trailer clips the door while it is part open. A roller bearing collapses and the stem jams. Or the track has worked loose from its wall bracket and splays open under load.

There is a fifth we see on older homes: an obstruction under the door. If the door closes onto a bin, a bag of cement or a raised threshold, the cable goes slack, unwinds off the drum, and the next open cycle drags the door up crooked.

Working out which of those happened matters more than the refit itself, because putting the rollers back without fixing the cause only buys you a week. A door that came off because a cable snapped will do it again on the next cycle, so the cable, the drum and the bracket all get checked before the door goes back up.

Making the door safe before anything else

An off-track door is unstable. Before any repair we clamp it, support the weight and release the opener so nothing can drive it further. Where a section is wedged against a track under tension, the release has to be staged so the door does not fall.

This is why we ask people to stop pressing the button. Every attempt after the door jumps drives the panel harder into a bent rail, and a repair that would have been a roller and an hour becomes a bent track, a creased section and a much bigger bill.

If the door is stuck part open and the house cannot be locked up, tell us that when you ring and we will treat it as an emergency. In the meantime keep children and pets out of the garage, because a door hanging in a bent track can drop without any warning at all.

Refitting, straightening and testing

With the door supported, the rollers are walked back into the track one at a time, starting from the section that came out. Bent track is straightened where the steel is still sound and replaced where it has kinked, because a flattened bend will always catch again.

We then check plumb on the vertical tracks, clearance at every roller, the wall brackets and the lag bolts into the timber. Rollers with flat spots or seized bearings are replaced while everything is apart, since they are cheap and they are often what caused it.

Finally the door is cycled by hand, then under power, with the opener force reset. Most off-track jobs run one to two hours; a struck door with panel damage takes longer.
