Garage Remote Stopped Working? Here Is Why

What causes it

These are the causes we find most often, in roughly the order we check them.

1. 1

   Flat or poorly seated battery

   Remote batteries are usually a 3V CR2032 or a 12V A23. They fade rather than die, so the handset works from two metres but not from the kerb for a few weeks before it stops entirely. Heat inside a car parked in the Perth sun shortens their life considerably.

   What you can check

   Press the button and watch the small indicator light on the handset. A dim light, or one that only appears when you squeeze hard, means a flat battery or a dirty contact. Swap the battery and clean the contacts with a dry cotton bud.

   What we do

   If a fresh battery does not restore range we test the transmitter output, check the crystal and the button membrane, and either repair the handset or supply a coded replacement. We program the new remote to your opener before we leave and label it for you.

2. 2

   Receiver has lost its stored codes

   The codes live in the opener's receiver memory. A lightning strike, a brownout during a summer storm, or a failing memory chip can wipe them. The remote is still transmitting perfectly well; there is simply nothing left listening for it.

   What you can check

   Try every remote and keypad in the house. If none of them work but the wall button still opens the door, the transmitters are fine and the receiver has lost the plot. That combination is the classic signature.

   What we do

   We clear the receiver memory completely and re-pair each handset and keypad you actually use, which also locks out any remote that has gone missing. Where the receiver chip itself has failed we fit an external universal receiver rather than replace the whole opener.

3. 3

   Damaged, shortened or coiled aerial

   The thin wire hanging from the opener head is the aerial, and its length is tuned to the frequency. If it has been cut back, taped up into the ceiling, coiled around the rail or corroded at the terminal, range collapses to a couple of metres.

   What you can check

   Look at the aerial wire on the opener. It should hang straight down at full length and clear of metal. If it is wrapped around the rail, tucked above the housing, or broken off at the unit, that is your range problem.

   What we do

   We re-terminate or replace the aerial and reroute it clear of the rail and the steel door. In brick or steel-framed garages that still swallow the signal, we fit a remote-mounted external receiver with the aerial somewhere it can actually hear the handset.

4. 4

   Radio interference from new equipment

   433MHz is a crowded band. Cheap LED downlights, solar inverters, NBN and 4G modems, EV chargers and some dimmers throw out enough noise to swamp a remote. The give-away is a remote that works fine at night or when the inverter is asleep.

   What you can check

   Note exactly when the remote fails. If range drops in the middle of a sunny day, or dropped off after a specific light or appliance was installed, switch that item off at the wall and try again from the same spot on the driveway.

   What we do

   We identify the noise source with a signal meter, relocate the receiver and aerial away from it, and where necessary move the opener onto a cleaner rolling-code system. Sometimes replacing a batch of noisy downlights is the cheapest fix, and we will say so.

5. 5

   Worn button membrane or cracked case

   Remotes live in centre consoles, pockets and on visor clips. The rubber contact under the button wears through and stops bridging the circuit. A cracked case lets in dust and moisture, which corrodes the board around the battery clip.

   What you can check

   Press a different button on the same handset. If the door responds to button two but not button one, the remote is at fault and the opener is fine. Look for a green or white crust around the battery terminals.

   What we do

   Light corrosion cleans up and contacts can be re-tinned, but a worn membrane is rarely worth the labour. We supply and code a matched replacement handset for the common brands, and a quality universal where the original model is obsolete.

6. 6

   Rolling code out of sync

   Rolling-code remotes change their code with every press. If a handset has been pressed dozens of times out of range, by a toddler or by keys pressing it inside a bag, it can run past the receiver's forward window and the opener stops recognising it.

   What you can check

   Try the remote from within a metre of the opener head, pressing steadily a few times. Some units resync at close range. If it works up close but never from the driveway, sync or range is the issue rather than the battery.

   What we do

   We resync the handset following the manufacturer's procedure and, where the memory is close to full or holds unknown codes, wipe it and start clean. It takes minutes, and it is a good moment to remove any remote you no longer have.
