Repair or Replace Your Garage Door Motor?
Worn drive gears, dead capacitors and failed logic boards are all repairable. Here is where the line sits between a sensible repair and throwing good money at an old opener.
The motor runs, you can hear it working, but the door does not move. Or it moves a few centimetres and stops. Or there is a grinding noise from the motor head and nothing else happens at all.
The question every customer asks next is the right one: is this worth fixing, or am I buying a new opener?
The honest answer, most of the time, is that it is worth fixing. Here is how we decide.
The single most common failure: a worn drive gear
Inside most belt and chain-drive openers is a nylon or plastic drive gear that meshes with a steel worm gear on the motor shaft. The plastic one is the sacrificial part — it is meant to be, because it is cheaper to replace a gear than a motor.
When it strips, the symptoms are unmistakable:
- The motor runs at normal speed but nothing moves.
- There is a grinding or whirring from the motor head.
- Plastic shavings or a fine white powder appear on the floor beneath the opener.
- The door moves erratically, sometimes catching a few remaining teeth.
This is a repair, not a replacement. A gear kit and an hour of labour typically runs $180 to $300 fitted, against $600 to $1,200 for a new opener installed. We see this constantly on Merlin, Steel-Line and Secura Lift units in particular.
The one thing worth checking is why the gear went. A gear that stripped at four years old on a well-balanced door is bad luck. A gear that stripped because the springs are worn and the opener has been dragging a heavy door for months will strip again in six months if the springs are not sorted at the same time. We check the door balance on every gear job for exactly that reason.
Capacitor failure
Symptoms: the motor hums but does not turn, or it needs a nudge to get going, or it works on a cool morning and refuses in the afternoon heat.
A start capacitor is a cheap component with a finite life, and Perth summers are hard on them. Replacement is typically $120 to $200 fitted and takes half an hour. Almost always worth doing.
Logic board failure
Symptoms: no response at all from remote or wall button, intermittent operation, lights flashing an error code, or the opener resetting itself mid-travel.
Here it starts to depend on age. A board for a current-model opener is usually available and costs $250 to $450 fitted. A board for a 15-year-old discontinued unit either does not exist or costs more than a new opener — and if we can find one, we are fitting a new part to a machine whose other components are all the same age.
Motor or transformer failure
If the motor windings or the transformer have gone, replacement is almost always the answer. At that point you are replacing the expensive half of the unit and inheriting the wear on everything else.
The threshold we actually use
Two rules, and they are not complicated.
The 50 per cent rule. If the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new opener installed, replace it. Spending $500 to keep a $900 unit alive is not a saving.
The 12-year rule. Past about twelve years, the case for a major repair weakens sharply — not because the repair will not work, but because the next failure is close behind and you will pay the call-out and diagnosis again. Under eight years, repair almost always wins.

Reasons to replace even when repair is possible
There are a few, and they are legitimate.
- No rolling-code security. Openers older than roughly 2005 often use fixed codes that can be captured and replayed. A rolling-code unit is a genuine security upgrade.
- No battery backup. If you have ever been locked out during a storm-season blackout, you already know why this matters in Perth.
- Noise. An old chain drive in a garage under a bedroom is a quality-of-life problem that a modern belt drive solves.
- Wi-Fi and phone control. Worth it to some people and pointless to others. Only you can price that one.
What we will not do
We will not tell you the whole opener needs replacing when a $200 gear kit would fix it. We are not an authorised dealer for any manufacturer, so nothing pushes us toward the larger sale, and a repair that fails inside our 12-month warranty costs us the return visit.
Equally, we will not fit a $400 board to a fifteen-year-old unit and let you think you have solved something. If the honest answer is replacement, you will get it.
