Handset, receiver or aerial: finding the actual fault

Three things have to work: the remote must transmit, the aerial must pick it up, and the receiver must recognise the code. We test them separately. A remote that only works within a couple of metres is transmitting weakly or facing a damaged aerial, while one the opener ignores entirely has usually lost its stored code.

The aerial is a thin wire hanging from the head unit. People tuck it up out of sight, or it gets cut during ceiling or insulation work, and range collapses to almost nothing. Rehanging it properly often fixes a fault a household has lived with for years.

Interference matters too. LED downlights, solar inverters and some networking gear sit close to the 433MHz band and can halve a remote's range. We test with the suspect device switched off to confirm it before recommending anything.

Rolling codes and reprogramming

Modern openers use rolling codes, where transmitter and receiver both step to a new code on every press. If a remote is pressed hundreds of times out of range of the door, some units lose sync and need re-pairing. That is a two-minute job, not a fault.

Older fixed-code and dip-switch units work differently. Those can be cloned directly onto a new handset, and they are also the ones that can be triggered by a neighbour with a matching switch pattern.

A power outage or a replaced logic board wipes stored remotes on many openers, which is why every handset in the house stops at once. We re-pair all of them, including car-mounted systems and wall-mounted keypads.

Replacements, keypads and universal receivers

If a handset is water damaged, cracked or the buttons have worn through the membrane, replacement is cheaper than repair. We carry genuine and compatible remotes for Merlin, B&D, Steel-Line, Gliderol, Centurion and ATA openers.

Where an opener is old enough that no remote is still made for it, a universal external receiver wires into the terminals and gives you new remotes without replacing the motor. That is often the cheapest way to modernise a perfectly good 20-year-old opener.
