What usually fails on ATA doors

    Stripped nylon drive gear

    Every GDO head passes torque through a nylon gear. It is the intended wear part, and after ten to fifteen years of daily cycles the teeth round off. The motor then runs at full noise with the door standing still.

    Symptom

    Trigger the opener and watch the door, not the head. Motor noise with no movement, especially with a gritty or grinding edge to it, is a stripped gear almost every time.

    The repair

    We fit the gear kit matched to your GDO model, clean out the old debris, re-grease the drive and re-learn the travel limits afterwards.

    Remotes will not code to the receiver

    ATA handsets use rolling code, and later units use TrioCode. Coding fails when the head's memory is full, when a handset from a different code family is being used, or when the receiver has been damaged by a surge.

    Symptom

    Check the wall button works first. Then look at the handset: the model number on the back tells us the code family. A handset that lights up but does nothing at close range points at the receiver.

    The repair

    We clear and rebuild the receiver memory, code every handset you own, and fit a compatible receiver where the original has failed.

    Travel limits lost after a power cut

    GDO units store their open and close positions electronically. A brownout, a board fault or a manual release used while the door was part way through travel can leave the head with no reliable reference.

    Symptom

    Look for a door that runs a short distance and stops, or one that opens fully but only closes half way. If the movement is smooth but the stopping points are wrong, it is the limits, not the mechanics.

    We re-learn the open and close limits, set the obstruction force correctly for your door weight, and test the auto-reverse before we leave.

    Battery backup pack has failed

    Some GDO models include a backup battery so the door still opens during a blackout. Those cells have a service life of a few years. Once they fail the head may beep, flash a warning or refuse to run on mains until the fault is cleared.

    Symptom

    Listen for a repeated beep from the motor head with no obvious door fault, and look for a warning indicator on the head or wall console.

    The repair

    We test the pack and the charging circuit, replace the battery with the correct type, and confirm the opener runs a full cycle on backup.

    Manual release cord or mechanism jammed

    The release lets you disconnect the door from the drive in an emergency. Cords perish in the heat, and the release lever can seize if it has never been used or if the door was left disengaged under load.

    Symptom

    Test the release only with the door fully closed. If the cord is brittle or the lever will not move, do not force it while the door is up; a disengaged door with a weak spring can drop.

    The repair

    We replace the cord and service or replace the release mechanism, then check the spring balance so the door is safe to move by hand.

Find your GDO model before you call

ATA prints a model number on a label on the motor head, usually on the side or underneath near the light cover. It starts with GDO followed by a number. That single detail decides which gear kit, board and remote we load before we leave the workshop, and it is the difference between one visit and two.

Can you supply new remotes for an ATA opener?
Yes. We carry the common ATA handsets, including PTX-format remotes, and code them to your opener while we are there. If your receiver is older or has failed, we can fit a current receiver so you get modern rolling-code handsets on the same motor rather than replacing the whole unit.
