Broken axle spring in a Roll-A-Door
The counterbalance spring lives inside the barrel the curtain rolls onto. When it snaps, the full weight of the curtain lands on the opener or on your arms, so the door either refuses to lift or slams down.
Symptom
Stand back and look at how the curtain sits. A crooked roll, a loud bang heard earlier in the day, or a door that suddenly feels far heavier by hand all point at the spring. You cannot inspect or adjust it yourself; it is sealed inside the barrel under lethal tension.
The repair
We take the load off the curtain, fit the correct spring rating for the door size and re-tension it to balance, then reset the opener limits.

Worn drive gear in a Controll-A-Door head
The gear that transfers motor torque to the door is nylon by design, so it wears before the motor does. Once the teeth round off, the motor still spins but nothing drives the door.
Symptom
Press the wall button and listen. A steady whir or a grinding noise with no door movement is the classic sign. Fine plastic dust under the motor head is the giveaway.
The repair
A gear kit restores most heads. If the board or motor windings have gone as well, replacing the opener head is the cheaper answer over the life of the door.

Remote dropped out of the receiver memory
A power surge, a flat handset battery or a replaced control board can all wipe or block a paired remote. B&D rolling-code handsets will not work again until they are re-coded.
Symptom
Try the wall button. If the door runs from the wall but not the handset, the fault is in the remote or the receiver, not the door. Fit a fresh battery and test within a few metres of the motor.
The repair
We re-code the handset, supply a replacement if the case or contacts are damaged, or fit a new receiver and pair every remote in the house.

Curtain out of the side guides
Reversing into the door, a strong easterly gust on an unlatched door, or years of slat wear will pop the curtain edge out of one guide. The door then jams part way and bows.
Symptom
Look along both guides for a gap where the curtain edge should sit, and check the bottom slat for a bend. Do not force the door up with the opener; you will bend more slats.
The repair
We unroll the curtain, straighten or replace the damaged slats, re-seat it into the guides and re-set the opener travel.

Panelift cables off the drum
On a sectional B&D door the lift cables wind onto drums at each end of the torsion shaft. If the door lands on a bin or one side binds, a cable can jump the drum and the door hangs skewed in the opening.
Symptom
From ground level, see whether the door sits square in the opening and whether one side has dropped. Keep clear of the cables and shaft; they are under spring tension even when the door looks relaxed.
The repair
We support the door, rewind the cables correctly, check the drum grooves and spring balance, and replace cables that are frayed or kinked.
Working out which B&D you have
B&D badge their doors and their openers separately, so telling us both saves time on the phone. The door name is usually stamped or stickered on the bottom slat or on the inside of a panel. The opener name is on the motor head, along with a model and serial label.

Why B&D doors wear the way they do in Perth
