What usually fails on Boss doors

   Drive gear worn past its teeth

   The gear inside a Boss head is nylon and takes the full torque of the motor. It is the part designed to wear, and at this age most of them have. The motor sounds healthy and the door does not move.

   Symptom

   Listen at the head while somebody presses the button. A constant-pitch whir with a still door is the tell. Look for pale plastic dust on the door or the floor under the unit.

   The repair

   We fit a gear kit where one is available for the model, clean and re-grease the drive, then re-learn the door travel.

2. 2

   Motor hums and will not start

   A tired start or run capacitor cannot deliver the kick the motor needs to break away from rest. The winding sits there drawing current, humming and warming up, until the thermal cut-out drops it.

   Symptom

   Listen for a hum of a few seconds followed by silence, and note whether the head is warm to the touch. Do not open the housing; the capacitor can hold a charge after the power is switched off.

   The repair

   We isolate the supply, discharge and replace the capacitor with the correct rating, and test the motor windings before returning it to service.

   Receiver stopped hearing the remotes

   The radio receiver is often the first electronic part to go, especially after a storm. It can fail outright, or lose the codes in memory, leaving handsets that light up but do nothing.

   Symptom

   Test the wall button. If the door runs from the wall but no handset works, and new batteries have not helped, the receiver is the likely culprit rather than the remotes.

   The repair

   We fit a replacement or external rolling-code receiver, code every handset in the house, and supply extra remotes if you are short of them.

4. 4

   Door stops part way then reverses

   Boss heads use force sensing to detect obstructions. A dry guide, a failing spring or a drifted limit is read as something in the way, so the opener backs off part way through the cycle.

   Symptom

   Pull the release and run the door by hand. Note exactly where it gets heavy or catches. If the door is hard work by hand, the opener is not the problem.

   The repair

   We fix the mechanical cause first, then reset the force and limits so the opener runs with headroom rather than at the edge of its settings.

5. 5

   Rail chain slack or trolley damaged

   On rail-mounted Boss units the chain stretches over the years and the plastic trolley that couples the door to the drive cracks. A slapping chain, a jerky start and a door that stops dead are the usual results.

   Symptom

   With the door closed, look along the rail. A chain hanging well below the rail edge is too slack. A trolley sitting crooked or a broken release arm is visible from the floor.

   The repair

   We re-tension the chain, replace the trolley and release arm, and check that the rail is still mounted square and true to the door.
