What usually fails on Dominator doors

  1. 1

    Sectional door off its tracks

    A Dominator sectional door runs on nylon rollers inside steel tracks. When a roller shatters, a hinge cracks or the door is closed onto an obstruction, a section jumps the track and the door wedges hard in the opening.

    Symptom

    Look at where the rollers sit relative to the track from a safe distance. Do not run the opener again and do not try to lever the door back; the cables can come off the drums and the door can fall.

    The repair

    We support the door, refit the sections into the track, replace the broken rollers and hinges, and check the cable and spring balance before handing it back.

    Rollers worn flat and noisy

    Nylon rollers develop flat spots and their bearings dry out. The door then rumbles, judders through the curve of the track and puts extra load on the opener every cycle.

    Symptom

    Open the door slowly by hand with the opener released and listen. A repeating clunk at the same point in travel, or a roller that is not turning at all, is easy to spot from the side.

    The repair

    We replace the full set of rollers rather than the worst one, lubricate the hinges and tracks, and re-check the opener force afterwards.

    Opener drive gear worn out

    As with every domestic opener, the nylon drive gear carries the load and wears first. Once the teeth strip, the head runs happily and the door does not budge.

    Symptom

    Listen for motor noise with no door movement. Look for pale nylon dust on top of the door or on the garage floor beneath the head.

    The repair

    We fit the correct gear kit, clean and re-grease the drive, and reset the travel limits, which always shift after a gear change.

    Broken lift cable on one side

    Sectional doors lift on a cable at each side. Cables fray where they wind on the drum and where they anchor at the bottom bracket, and rust accelerates it in coastal suburbs. When one lets go the door drops on that side and skews.

    Symptom

    Look at the door sitting in the opening. If one side is low and the other is high, or you can see a loose cable hanging, keep everyone clear and leave the door alone. The bottom bracket is under full spring load.

    The repair

    We fit a matched pair of new cables, inspect the drums and bottom brackets, and re-balance the spring so the load is even across the door.

    Wall control or wiring failure

    The wall button runs on light two-core cable stapled along the wall or ceiling. Staples cut through the insulation over time, shelving pinches the run, and the button contacts themselves wear out.

    Symptom

    If the remote works but the wall button does nothing, the fault is in the button or the wire, not the opener. Follow the cable run visually and look for staples, pinches and paint-over damage.

    The repair

    We replace the wall control, run new cable where the old run is damaged, and secure it properly clear of shelving and door hardware.

Roller door or sectional door?

Dominator supply both, and they fail in completely different ways, so the first thing we ask on the phone is which one you have. A roller door has a single curtain that rolls onto a barrel; a sectional door has panels that run back on tracks under the ceiling.

Roller door faults concentrate on the barrel spring, the guides and the curtain. Sectional faults concentrate on the rollers, hinges, cables and torsion spring above the opening. Telling us which one you have means the van arrives with the right parts on it.

My Dominator sectional door has come off its track. Can I push it back?
Please do not try. A door off its track is holding its weight in the wrong places, and pushing it can drop a cable off the drum or bring a panel down. Park outside, leave the door where it is and call us. Refitting it properly takes about an hour with the right gear.

How often should a Dominator door be serviced?
Once a year for a family home that cycles the door four or five times a day, and every six months if it is your main entry or you live near the coast. A service covers lubrication, roller and hinge checks, spring balance, opener force and the auto-reverse safety test.

Can you replace the motor on a Dominator door with a different brand?
Yes. Openers are not tied to door brands, so we can fit a suitable replacement head to your existing Dominator door, matched to its type, width and weight. That is often the best value when a very old opener fails but the door itself is still in good condition.
